What are dental veneers ?

Dental veneers are thin, shell like custom-made tooth-colored covering on the front surface of the teeth. It is placed after removing about half-millimeter of enamel from the front surface of the tooth. The thin shells are bonded (cemented) to the front of the teeth, changing their color, shape, size, or length.


What all the veneers can fix?

Veneers can fix a variety of cosmetic issues. Such as Discolored teeth, Worn down teeth, Chipped teeth, Gaps, Misalignments can be corrected with veneers.

Anyone can benefit from veneers if one doesn’t like the look of his/her teeth or overall smile. For example, those who don’t want to undergo braces but have crooked teeth; others who don’t like the color of their teeth (discoloration) and want to whiten them permanently; and some patients who have chipped front teeth can undergo veneers.

Number of veneers required?
We can do one tooth (let’s say its discoloured or crooked or broken )or the entire set of teeth or just upper front teeth. The treatment plan may differ from person to person.

Number of sittings required?
On first visit treatment plan is made and once the person commits to the veneer plan x-rays, photographs, moulds are taken. Next he/she comes for veneer preparation and the impression is made which is sent to the lab and on the third appointment the veneers are bonded. In between the appointments, temporary veneers may be placed.

Amount of natural tooth structure removed?
In most of the cases the amount of tooth which we shave away is about .5 millimeter [equal to the width of the fingernail] but it may vary according to the treatment plan.

How long do the veneers last?
To make the veneers last longer one needs to maintain a good oral hygiene. Proper flossing and brushing and regularity with the dental check-ups and clean up’s helps the veneer last as longer as 10 -15 years.

What precautions one needs to take after getting the veneers?
Veneers are similar to natural teeth. While they can withstand normal wear and tear but they can chip and crack too same as the natural teeth.

Are veneers for everyone?
Veneers are very popular right now, but that does not mean everyone can get them [Poor oral hygiene and too many tooth decay or gum infection can prevent people from getting veneers]. Cosmetic dentist examines patients before approving them for veneers.

Will the Veneers look natural?
One of the reasons the veneers look so natural is because each is customized for the patient. The material used for veneer is ceramic which is biocompatible (tolerated well by the gums) and is most aesthetically pleasing. Also, veneers have least tendency to catch stains.

Is the process painful?
The process is completely painless, while the patient might experience some sensitivity while tooth preparations, anesthetic administration is done to make it completely comfortable.
